Hosting a Thanksgiving that your family will remember for years to come includes more than just serving up an amazing meal. (Though, that’s still a major part of it.) What will really leave you and your loved ones with lasting memories will be the experience you have while spending time with each other.
That’s why Thanksgiving games are the perfect way to make Turkey Day tons more fun, especially if you have kids. We’ve rounded up a combination of festive crafts, engaging activities and challenging trivia that will keep the entire family entertained.
While bingo and scavenger hunts will almost certainly ensure a day full of fun for large groups or teams, there are also games like word search, “I spy” and Thanksgiving riddles that are still fun to play even with one or two people.
If your family happens to be partial to minute-to-win-it games, we have a few of those, too. Just don’t forget to give out special prizes to the winners. If you need inspiration, our Thanksgiving gifts can help with that.
Californians celebrate Veteran’s Day in nearly every city and community throughout the state. The events take place on November 11 and surrounding days to honor U.S. veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Veterans Day National Ceremony is held annually on November 11th, with one national service at Arlington National Cemetery. It starts with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations.
The day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations, said President Woodrow Wilson when he declared the first celebration would be called Armistice Day. Congress amended it in 1954, replacing “Armistice” with “Veterans.”

Noche de Altares (Night of the Altars), now in its 21st year, is the highlight of Santa Ana’s Día de Los Muertos celebrations and one of the most anticipated events of the season. Organized by El Centro Cultural de México, this vibrant event transforms the streets of Downtown Santa Ana into a stunning display of altars (ofrendas)—each one a unique tribute of love and remembrance for lost loved ones.
From noon until evening, the streets will be filled with an electric atmosphere of live music, traditional dance performances, community art installations, and dozens of intricately designed altars. Whether you’re creating an altar to honor someone special or simply enjoying the creativity of others, the air will be thick with emotion, laughter, and the tantalizing scents of delicious food.
Since 2002, Noche de Altares has invited families, artists, and local organizations to participate with beautifully crafted altars, art workshops, and live performances throughout the day. Street food vendors will offer traditional Mexican dishes such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and tamales, adding to the sensory richness of the celebration. Celebrate Día de los Muertos with El Poder de la Cultura Morelense as they bring the colorful tradition of the Chinelos de Morelos to Santa Ana. This exciting event, which runs from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, will feature a stunning parade of Chinelos, Catrinas, and the lively Band Carnaval at 5:00 PM, creating a festive atmosphere filled with music, dance, and culture.
The term “Chinelos” comes from the Nahuatl word “zineloquie,” meaning “disguised.” This traditional dance originated after the Spanish conquest as a way for indigenous people to mock the elaborate and formal clothing of European colonizers. However, the dance’s components can be traced back to ancient Aztec origins, making it a meaningful blend of pre-Hispanic and colonial history. The Chinelos are famous for their exaggerated costumes, featuring large hats, colorful robes, and masks, and their energetic, rhythmic dances that enliven any celebration.
With the additional presence of the iconic Catrinas—elegant skeletal figures symbolizing the blending of life and death—this event promises to be an immersive cultural experience that honors Mexican traditions and heritage.

Among the highlights are lowrider cars, their polished exteriors adorned with altars (called ofrendas)—carefully crafted displays that honor the memories of loved ones with photos, food, and personal mementos.
As evening falls, the figure of La Catrina—a traditional representation of death, dressed in elegant clothing and painted in skeletal form—graces the festival, reminding us to embrace life with laughter and joy, even in the presence of death. Viva La Vida beautifully captures the essence of the community as families and friends come together to celebrate and honor those who have passed. With faces painted and spirits high, attendees are encouraged to express themselves through dance and celebration, fully embracing the joyous spirit of life that defines this festival.

Although called “winter squash,” the natural season of these varieties of squash and pumpkins runs from late summer to mid-winter, with some varieties available year-round. There are several to choose from, from homey acorn squash and magical Cinderella pumpkins to charmingly shaped turban squash.
Winter squash have thick, tough shells that protect the sweet, rich flesh inside which makes them excellent storage vegetables. No matter what variety of winter squash or pumpkin you choose, always pick squash that feels heavy for their size. Also, make sure to cook the squash properly to bring out its best flavor and texture.
Butternut Squash
MIXA / Getty Images
Over the past several years, butternut squash has become a standard ingredient on menus as the star in a creamy soup, ravioli filling, or risotto flavor. It is the sweetest winter squash with a thick, bright orange, moist flesh that hides very few seeds. The squash is an elongated pear shape with a thin, pale tan skin that is easy to peel. They usually weigh between 2 and 3 pounds.
Butternut squash is quite versatile; it sautes quickly and is especially delicious when roasted. Best of all, it mashes and purees smoothly, with no thick strands or fibrous bits, making it perfect to turn into a luscious soup.
Acorn Squash
Mint Images / Tim Pannell / Getty Images
Until the recent rise in popularity of butternut squash, acorn squash was the most commonly available in the U.S. Acorn squash are round, with even groves around the entire squash and moist, sweet, tender flesh. The skin is mostly dark green, with occasional splotches of orange and yellow and the flesh is slightly yellowish pumpkin orange. They tend to weigh between 12 ounces and 2 pounds.
Perfect for roasting, baking, steaming, mashing, and sautéing, these flavorful squash are quite versatile, and the smaller ones can simply be cut in half, seeds removed, and roasted with a little butter and brown sugar for a sweet side dish the kids will love. They’re also the ideal vessel for stuffing, and make an excellent vegan main course for special occasions and holidays.
Spaghetti Squash
MIXA / Getty Images
Spaghetti squash is all about the texture; once cooked, the flesh pulls apart into thick, slightly crisp, noodle-like strands (hence the name). Many people then serve it with tomato sauce, but there are other delicious ways to prepare and serve this squash such as simply roasting it with butter and salt.
Spaghetti squash is large, weighing in between 3 and 5 pounds, with pale yellow-white skin and orange or bright yellow flesh. When raw and cut in half, the interior is similar looking to other squash in that is it solid and filled with seeds; it is only after it is cooked that it takes on the appearance of spaghetti.
Delicata Squash
The Picture Pantry / Alanna Taylor-Tobin / Getty Images
Delicata squash is small, oblong, and cheerfully striped in bright yellow, dark green, and orange. The peel is exceptionally thin and is, in fact, edible (although many choose not to partake). The flesh is sweet, nutty, and a bit drier than other squash with a distinct corn-like flavor. It is particularly delicious cut into rings and roasted with butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon. You can also stuff the halves and bake.
Because of its thin skin, however, it does not store as long or as easily as other winter squash. When purchasing, make sure to check delicatas for bruises, cuts, and soft spots before buying. Delicate squash tends to weigh less than a pound.
Hubbard Squash
Laurence Mouton / Getty Images
Hubbard squash can be some of the largest winter squash you’ll find (besides field pumpkins, that is)—the smallest ones still dwarf the largest of butternut squash. Because of their size, hubbards are often sold in seeded pre-cut chunks, making the squash more appealing to home cooks.
Hubbards are slightly tear-shaped with dark green to pale grayish blue skins and remarkably sweet flesh with a clear pumpkin flavor. They are at their best when roasted; try seasoning them with rosemary and black pepper. Or roast and then mash them along with plenty of butter and warm spices like cumin or nutmeg.
They sweeten as they sit and their extra-thick skins help them store through the winter (up to 5 months if kept properly cool and dry). Since hubbards are so big, you may find you have leftovers, in which case you can easily make a delicious winter squash spice cake.
Sweet Dumpling Squash
The Spruce / Molly Watson
The yellow skin with bright orange or deep green stripes makes this small, terribly cute squash hard to resist. They are no more than 4 inches in diameter and weigh less than a pound, making them perfect for stuffing, roasting, and serving as an appetizer or side dish.
Due to its shape and size, the exterior of sweet dumpling squash is difficult to peel, so the squash is usually cooked along with its skin, either cut into wedges or halved horizontally; once cooked, you can choose to eat the skin or discard it. The flesh is starchy but has a smooth texture and is sweet with a slight corn flavor.
Blue Hokkaido Pumpkin
The Spruce / Molly Watson
Blue Hokkaido squash (a type of pumpkin) is quite special. As if the gray-blue skin giving way to bright orange flesh didn’t have you sold, these squash also have a wonderfully subtle sweet and deeply nutty flavor that stands on its own better than any winter squash.
Simply roasted with a bit of salt and butter, the Blue Hokkaido is delicious. It also makes a wonderful vessel for a dramatic stuffed squash and its flesh mashes up nicely into baked good or soups.
Kabocha Squash
The Spruce / Isabelle Boucher
Kabocha squash is remarkably sweet and tender with a slightly nutty flavor. The dense, smooth, sweet flesh is so tasty it needs very little fuss in preparation—roasting it or slicing and baking it with a bit of butter or oil and salt are all these delicious squash needs. The flesh also holds its shape when cooked, even in liquids, which makes it perfect for incorporating as chunks in soups or steamed dishes, as well as making into tempura. It pairs nicely with ginger and sesame as well.
Kabocha squash is large, round, and squat. They are dark green and mottled, often with bumpy skin and make lovely table decoration until they’re cooked. The peel is really more of a rind and is difficult to cut so the squash is usually cooked with the skin intact.
Long Island Cheese Pumpkins
The Spruce / Molly Watson
The plump and magical shape of cheese pumpkins means they are often, along with Rouge Vif d’Etampes pumpkins, called “Cinderella pumpkins” since it is easy to imagine them suddenly springing into a carriage. They are one of the oldest pumpkin varieties cultivated in the U.S.
Cheese pumpkins have wonderfully sweet and firm flesh, perfect for roasting, but this pumpkin can also be baked, steamed, boiled, grilled, and even pickled. Most parts of a cheese pumpkin are edible, including the skin and seeds.
Rouge Vif d’Etampes Pumpkins
The Spruce / Molly Watson
Rouge Vif d’Etampes pumpkins are a brilliant red-orange color that would be magical enough, but they are also wonderfully round and squat, the combination giving them the nickname “Cinderella pumpkins.”
The vibrant color continues on the inside of Rouge Vif d’Etampes pumpkins, which are perfect for roasting with a bit of spice.
Hokkaido Squash (Red Kuri)
Westend61 / Getty Images
The Hokkaido squash, also called Red Kuri squash, looks like a small, red-orange pumpkin without the deep ridges in the sides. The flesh is bright orange and has a mellow, somewhat nutty flavor that is good in soups or baked goods; the Red Kuri’s small size also makes it perfect for stuffing and roasting.
Spicy Sambal roasted pumpkin works with pretty much any winter squash but is particularly delicious with the nutty flavor of Red Kuri.
Giraumon Squash
Sean Duan / Getty Images
Giraumons’ colors range from mottled green, orange, and yellow and the skin is interestingly bumpy, which is why they are widely used as decoration. They can, unlike decorative gourds, be roasted and eaten, their mild flesh taking nicely to a wide range of seasonings and their floury texture working well in soups. The large turban squash makes excellent edible soup tureens; simply roast until tender and fill.
Sugar Pie and Other Sweet Pumpkins
The Spruce / Molly Watson
Yes, pumpkins are winter squash. Field pumpkins, like those used for jack o’ lanterns, have dry, flavorless flesh. They can be used as baked tureens for soup, but are otherwise best left for carving and decoration. Some varieties of pumpkins, however, can be roasted or turned into soups just like other scrumptious winter squash.
“Sugar pie” and other smaller, sweet pumpkins make for great eating and can be used just like acorn squash. The smaller specimens can be hollowed out, roasted until tender, and filled with savory custards or small portions of soup for a fun dinner party treat.
Look for pumpkins labeled sweet or sugar pumpkins. You can bake, roast, mash, or puree these eating pumpkins just like other winter squash. They are also tasty when made the star ingredient in a quiche.
White Pumpkins
Michael Marquand / Getty Images
Some white pumpkins are simply white field pumpkins and are best used for decorations and carving. Others, though, are new or heirloom varieties that make for sweet and delicious eating. Their flesh tends to be in the yellow-to-mild orange spectrum, not white like their exteriors and has a wonderful taste and texture. White pumpkins are available in several varieties, but the lumina tends to have the best taste. Use a white pumpkin next time you bake a pumpkin cake.

Frank Lloyd Wright is arguably the most legendary American architect and one of the most recognized architects in the world. Wright designed hundreds of residential, commercial, and civic buildings as well as furniture and other structures throughout the United States, earning numerous National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage designations.
Born in Wisconsin in 1867, Wright’s career officially began in Chicago in the 1880s. He dedicated seven decades to creating and teaching architecture and design, resulting in thousands of designs and hundreds of built locations, many of which remain today. His home bases included Illinois, Wisconsin, and later Arizona, where he eventually died.
As a residential architect, he was known for his Prairie Style and design philosophy that embraced nature and created homes that blended with and incorporated the surrounding landscape. His work influenced everything from open floor plans to furniture design. Designing during two World Wars and the Depression, he also developed affordable housing while strongly advocating that small and affordable homes could still be thoughtfully and beautifully designed.
Here, we highlight 13 houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that you can tour in the United States. They span the length of his career, from the 1880s through the 1950s, and are a mix of grand historic sites and smaller, locally run houses—some of which only opened to the public in the past decade. As such, their accessibility varies, too: while some may offer tours year-round, others may have set available times or require special booking; many require advanced ticket purchases rather than day-of admission at the door.
01 | Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio: Oak Park, Illinois
UniversalImagesGroup / Getty Images
This is Wright’s first home and studio as an architect, where he lived from 1889 through 1909. It was his first solo work where he had complete artistic control, and Wright altered its structure both while he lived there and after, including updates for later owners.
The initial structure was his home at an important time in Wright’s life, including his influential work under architect Louis Sullivan and when he struck out on his own in 1893. Leading his own successful company, Wright added a studio to the home in 1898. Today, the buildings include colorful stained glass, painted murals, and many international motifs. The shingle-styled exterior feels significantly different from his later iconic Prairie School works.
Visit:Guided tours of both the home and studio are available.
02 | Taliesin: Spring Green, Wisconsin
Buyenlarge / Getty Images
Located in the area of his family’s ancestral home, the 800-acre estate around Taliesin is a deeply personal location to Wright. The area includes buildings developed throughout his career, from the Wright-designed interior of the 1886 Unity Chapel to the estate’s visitor center, completed in the 1960s after Wright’s death.
The name Taliesin refers specifically to the 37,000-square-foot home that Wright not only designed but lived and worked in. It was developed in three phases between 1911 and 1925. Much like Wright himself, the house has a tempestuous history, including multiple fires and murder.
The Taliesin house sits on a property that includes many other sites designed by Wright, including a barn (1952) and windmill (1897). Before he developed Taliesin, Wright built the Hillside School (1903) for his aunts and a home for his sister’s family (1907) on the property. The school became the home of the Wright Fellowship, which started in the 1930s.
Visit: Multiple tour options allow you to explore the Taliesin house, grounds, and other buildings on the site.
03 | Hollyhock House: Los Angeles, California
Education Images / Getty Images
One of Wright’s earliest homes on the West Coast belonged to Aline Barnsdall. The heiress to an oil fortune, she sought out Wright to help design an artists’ community on a 36-acre plot in the Hollywood area in 1919.
Wright included Barnsdall’s favorite flower, hollyhocks, throughout the design, including roof finials, furniture, art glass windows, and ornamental friezes and accents. Very different from many of his other works—particularly the works on this list—the Hollyhock House has Mayan influences, Art Deco details, and is constructed of hollow-clay blocks with a stucco coating and cast stone ornamentation.
Ultimately, the house and structures Wright had begun developing were not what Barnsdall was looking for, and in 1927 she gave the city of Los Angeles stewardship of the house, another Wright-designed guest house, and some of the land.
Completed in 1909, the Robie House is a stand-out example of Wright’s Prairie School aesthetic: a style that reflects the prairie’s ongoing horizon. The Robie House is strikingly horizontal—one of the signature characteristics of the style—from the overall shape to the details, such as the orientation of the brick and mortar on the outside. It features a large, long living space separated by a fireplace, which is iconic to many of Wright’s designs as well. Wright also designed some of his more recognizable furniture for this house, including the Robie chair and Robie sofa.
Early in his career, Wright showed an interest in affordable housing production. Wright collaborated with Arthur L. Richards in Milwaukee to create affordable, easy-to-build yet stylish homes. American System-Built Homes were developed by Wright between 1911 and 1917 (the U.S. entry into WWI stopped progress). American System-Built Homes were cut at a factory, then shipped for on-site assembly. To demonstrate the concept, Richards built six of Wright’s homes on Burnham Street in south Milwaukee.
According to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, more than a dozen dealers sold these home designs, with multiple built across Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana, in addition to Wisconsin. These homes may be recognized from the most recent season of Top Chef, where the crew visits Burnham (along with Taliesin) in episode four.
Darwin Martin was an important figure in Wright’s career who hired Wright to construct multiple properties for his family, as well as offering Wright his first commercial commission. Initially, Martin had Wright design a house for his sister; the Barton House, as it is known, was completed in 1903.
Completed four years later on the same property, Wright developed Martin’s family home, adding a pergola, conservatory, and carriage house. A cottage was added in 1909. The Martin House architecture features Wright’s classic cantilever design, and its details include 16 different abstract patterns of art glass, including Wright’s legendary “tree of life” pattern.
Today, the property is home to the Barton and Martin houses, as well as the 1909 cottage. The carriage house, conservatory, and pergola were demolished in the 1960s but rebuilt in the mid-2000s, according to Wright’s original drawings.
Visit: Multiple tour options are available to see the Martin House as well as the Barton House and other buildings on the grounds. There is an option that includes Martin’s Graycliff summer estate, also designed by Wright, located in nearby Derby, NY.
07 | Fallingwater: Mill Run, Pennsylvania
Prisma by Dukas / Getty Images
In 1991, the American Institute of Architects called Fallingwater the “best all-time work of American architecture.” Fallingwater was originally a summer home commissioned by Edgar and Liliane Kaufmann, parents of a student in Wright’s Taliesin Fellowship. It is easily Wright’s most iconic residential work, heralded for its representation of his organic approach to architecture and the intertwining of architecture and nature. Wright used sandstone from the area and built the home over a waterfall, its cantilevered design and numerous terraces reflecting the rock ledges of its surroundings.
The main house was completed in 1937 and a guest house was added in 1939. It opened for public tours in 1964, and today, the home includes the Kaufmann’s own art collection and many original interior furnishings chosen by Wright.
08 | Seth Peterson Cottage: Lake Delton, Wisconsin
Courtesy of sethpeterson.org
The Seth Peterson Cottage is one of Wright’s smallest residences, a petite 880-square-foot house nestled amongst the trees of Mirror Lake State Park. The small structure allows most of the interior to be drenched in natural light from the windows and terrace that offer a view of Mirror Lake. The simple layout wraps around a central fireplace. The structure is made largely of local sandstone, flagstone, and wood accents, fully embracing Wright’s organic design ethos.
The house was commissioned by Seth Peterson, an admirer of Wright’s work, in 1957, and both Wright and Peterson died before it was complete. It was abandoned for several years before it was ultimately rescued and restored.
Visit: Not only is the house available for touring, but it’s also open to rent so you can experience living in a Frank Lloyd Wright home yourself.
09 | Bradley House: Kankakee, Illinois
Courtesy of Trip Advisor
Built in 1900, the Bradley House is an early work by Frank Lloyd Wright, considered to be his first Prairie house. It’s located on one acre of land along the Kankakee River. Of note are the house’s 90 art glass windows, most of which are originals. The Bradley house has passed through numerous hands as a private residence, and even existed as a restaurant, inn, and office space. It was eventually restored to its residential roots and converted to a public museum in 2010.
Visits: The Bradley House offers tours that give a close-up look at both Wright’s house and stable.
10 | Rosenbaum House: Florence, Alabama
Buyenlarge / Getty Images
The only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Alabama, the Rosenbaum House is one of many examples of Wright’s Usonian designs: low-cost housing intended to help families achieve their homeownership dreams. It is also one of the earliest examples of his Usonian homes.
Originally 1,540 square feet, the Rosenbaum House was built for newlyweds Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum in 1939. After having children, the Rosenbaums asked Wright to design an addition, adding more than 1,000 square feet in 1948 and demonstrating the ability of his architecture to grow with the American family. Built of wood, brick, and glass, it showcases many characteristics of the Usonian design: a fairly flat structure with multi-level roofs, tall windows, and a carport. It also includes furniture originally designed by Wright for the house. The home was owned by the Rosenbaum family until 1999 when the city took ownership.
The Kalil House is a rare Usonian Automatic House—one of only seven ever built. Constructed with concrete blocks in a modular design, these homes were intended to be even less expensive than Wright’s previous Usonian designs. The result is a look that differs greatly from much of Wright’s remaining residential designs. This 1,406-square-foot home was built in 1955 for Toufic H. Kalil, who knew Wright’s work from the Zimmermans, a couple who had commissioned Wright to design their house on the same street in 1949.
The house only recently became open to the public, after the Courier Art Museum acquired it from private ownership in late 2019.
Visit: A two-hour tour visits both of the Kalil and Zimmerman Houses.

The Willey House holds a unique place in Wright’s career: It was the first commission after Wright established the Taliesin Fellowship, and it is considered to be the beginning of the end for the Prairie school and the beginning of the Usonian designs.
Wright published an autobiography in 1932 that inspired Malcolm and Nancy Willey to contact Wright about creating a home for them. He actually designed two—the first was too large and expensive but the second became the Willey House, completed in 1934. The placement of the kitchen as more open to the rest of the floor plan is a significant change in his work that’s visible in the Willey House. New owners in the early 2000s made preservation a priority.
Much like the Midwest’s flat prairie influence, Wright again found inspiration in nature, this time from the desert and McDowell Mountains. The result is Taliesin West, a structure originally developed largely of rock, wood, cement, and sand.
Organic in style as well as material, it had Wright’s common low-slung profile with strong angles and local color. It was Wright’s winter residence and workspace. Established in 1937, it was frequently developed throughout Wright’s life until he died in nearby Phoenix in 1959. Taliesin West held a drafting studio, residence, and workshops for apprentices, and gathering spaces such as a dining hall and theaters.
Visit: The location is home to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and offers guided and audio tours.
You want to know the best toddler beaches with no waves in OC? I’m going to provide you with my Top 4 plus two bonus beaches, but they come with a note of precaution.
Still water beaches, meaning no waves or surf, have a general propensity for water quality issues and they can also be good stingray habitat – at least along the warm sandy edges.
Check Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for water quality. Make sure a lifeguard is watching and ask for his/her advice about local conditions on the day you visit.
Any body of water is a dangerous place for a toddler – you should be within arm’s length of any child under 4 years old when they are wading or swimming – and this especially applies at the beach!
As long as you move forward with those precautions in mind, then you should have a grand time at these toddler beaches!
Corona Del Mar — inside the harbor (Pirate’s Cove)
Scramble down the path that leads over the rocks and take the stairs to this mini beach (NOT stroller-friendly). Check the tides before you go!
You’ll have to find parking on the street above the beach or pay for parking in the adjacent lot. Read my post about Corona Del Mar Beach.
It’s also a fun place to watch boats enter and leave Newport Harbor in the summer. The Wedge is just across the harbor and from the bluff you can see the surf pound the breakwater.
Baby Beach in Dana Point
You can park close and you don’t have to pay for parking, but this one can get incredibly busy on weekends and holidays. So arrive early!
It’s a launch point for paddleboards and kayaks, as well. Swimmers are roped off from boat traffic by a buoy line so you’ll have some room for shallow water swimming. Read my post about Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor.
Weekday trips in the off-season are probably the least crowded. August and September can still be very warm in California.
Also, be aware that it can be 90 degrees at your house inland and foggy at the beach. Make sure you come prepared!
Some families prefer the grassy area behind the beach for relatively sand-free picnics.
Newport Dunes in Newport Beach
Parking inside Newport Dunes will cost you, but there is a wide bay for swimming and you can pay extra for access to a waterpark with float toys in the summer for playing in the water.
North Star Beach in Newport Beach’s Back Bay is in the same general geographic area as Newport Dunes (above), except the opposite side of the bay and a little further inland. So much of the area is protected as a nature preserve.
This City of Newport Beach spot is designed for launching recreational watercraft like kayaks, outriggers, canoes, and paddleboards. The beach area is VERY small, but the water play is fun and airplanes fly over from Orange County Airport. This is NOT a swimming beach, but more of a wading spot for toddlers.
There are quite a few things to be aware of at North Star Beach and also a lot of links to share about it, so I ended up writing a full post on it.
I have had one parent complain of rocks that hurt her child’s foot, but otherwise no reported issues over the years this one has been included on the list. Could be seasonal since beaches tend to have the sand wash in and out over the year (summer = more sand, less rocks)?
Mother’s Beach in Huntington Harbour
A favorite for the Huntington Beach area is Mother’s Beach inside Huntington Harbour (thanks to reader, Meg, for pointing that one out)!
This one has an awesome pirate-themed playground and it’s somewhat off the beaten path (except on popular weekends and holidays when it can be really busy)!
So that’s it! If you can think of any other toddlerbeaches in OC with NO waves, please let me know! I do know of another in Huntington Harbour, but the parking is pretty impossible so I’ve not included it here.
If you want to know about the 30+ Toddler-Friendly Parks in Orange County, then make sure you go read that blog post which highlights playgrounds with baby swings and restrooms – and other features that make them work for younger kids!
